About Prof. R.Chatterjee

Prof. Ratnamala Chatterjee is currently a Professor in the Physics Department of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Head of Magnetics & Advanced Ceramics group in the Department. She is also the Coordinator of DST National Facility (MPMS SQUID Magnetometer)-Low Temperature High Magnetic Field Facility at IIT Delhi. Prof. Chatterjee completed her Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in the year 1986 and there after joined Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA as a Post Doctoral Associate in 1987. Her research interests include Topological Insulators, Magnetoelectric Multiferroic materials, Magnetic Shape Memory Alloys, Shape Memory in Ceramics, Non-Pb based environment friendly ceramics for actuators, Microwave Absorbing materials (Stealth Technology) and Magnetic ion doped high-k oxides; all under the broad classification - Novel Functional Ferroic Materials. Professor Chatterjee received the APS-IUSSTF Professorship Award (2012), Materials Research Society of India Medal (2012), Honour plaque and citation for her contribution in the field of Magnetism by Women Physicist Association of Mother Teresa Women’s University on Science Day (2011), CNRS Invited Professorship at the Laboratories de Science et Génie des Matériaux et de Métallurgie, at Ecole des Mines, Nancy, France (2003), Australia International Education Foundation’s (AIEF) Visiting Professorship Award (1997), Japan Resesearch & Development Corporation’s Science & Technology Agency Award (1993).

She has published more than 100 research articles in refereed international journals of repute in the area of electrical, magnetic and other ferroic materials. Her work has been well cited (average citation ~10 and maximum citation for a paper is 96, including 2 citations from Linus Pauling for her work on Quasicrystals) and recognized by the researchers working in these areas.

She is in the panel of referees for American Physical Society, American Institute of Physics and Elsevier Journals. Prof. Chatterjee has served as an Expert member of Academic Council of various Indian Universities and has reviewed books from various publishing houses. She is also a nominated Full Member, Third World Organization for Women in Science, Trieste, Italy. She has given more than 50 invited, keynote, plenary talks at prime conferences in her field of interest and has chaired sessions in various National & International Conferences.
