Vertically standing nanoporous Al–Ag zig-zag silver nanorods arrays for highly active SERS substrates


We have demonstrated a simple de-alloying method to create nanogaps in a vertically standing zig-zag AgNR arrays which act as SERS active hot spots for increased SERS sensitivity. The dealloying step of mild acid etching (2.5%v/v HCl for 45 min) allowed the formation of Raman hot spots on the elbows of zig-zag nanorods, where the Al concentration was highest, while maintaining the zig-zag morphology of highly active Ag nanostructures.
